When I was plotting An Ideal Duchess, one of the most important elements was the setting. Google has scanned a number of issues of Country Life (est. 1897), and I regularly flip through them in search of the perfect manor house in which to set my story. The perfect manor house in this case was the very lovely and breathtaking Dyrham Park. I then whipped out Google Maps to pinpoint the house and discovered the gorgeous scenery of Gloucestershire–and the Cotswolds in particular. Below you’ll find a few watercolors of the Cotswolds from a book published in 1920, titled Cotswolds Water-Colours.
